Over the last couple of weeks I have been noticing a new meme/phenomena being commented on, weird sounds being reported from all around the world. This post is an ongoing collection of comments/vids, along with my own observations and thoughts at the end.

What are they? Mysterious unexplained noises now being reported across the globe
Posted on January 17, 2012
January 17, 2012 – World – A series of unexplained noises are being reported across the globe and the frequency of these events appear to be increasing. The sounds range in description from “bizarre and creepy” to “industrial and mechanical.” The sounds appear to be omni-directional and seem to have no single traced source of origin or horizontal source of degree graduation- leaving one with the impression they are coming from directly overhead or directly underneath the earth. The videos below are reports of the unexplained acoustic phenomenon. Are these sounds omens of an impending disaster, or the deep-churching in the Earth an indication the lithosphere is becoming unsettled, mistpouffers, or something else? You decide. – The Extinction Protocol
"Mistpouffers
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mistpouffers are unexplained reports that sound like a cannon or a sonic boom. They have been heard in many waterfront communities around the world such as the banks of the river Ganges in India, the East Coast and inland Finger Lakes of the United States, as well as areas of the North Sea, Japan and Italy; and sometimes away from water. Names (according to area) are:
Bangladesh: Barisal Guns
Italy: "brontidi" or "marinas"
Japan: "uminari"
Netherlands and Belgium: "mistpoeffers"
Philippines: "retumbos"
United States: "Guns of the Seneca" around Seneca Lake & Cayuga Lake, Seneca guns in the Southeast US, and "Moodus noises" in lower Connecticut valley.
elsewhere: "fog guns"
They have been reported from: on an Adriatic island in 1824; Western Australia & Victoria in Australia; Belgium; frequently on calm summer days in the Bay of Fundy, Canada; Lough Neagh in Northern Ireland; Scotland; Passamaquoddy Bay, New Brunswick & Cedar Keys, Florida & Franklinville, New York in 1896 & in northern Georgia in the United States....Their sound has been described as being like distant but inordinately loud thunder while no clouds are in the sky large enough to generate lightning. Those familiar with the sound of cannon fire say the sound is nearly identical. The booms occasionally cause shock waves that rattle plates. Early white settlers in North America were told by the native Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) that the booms were the sound of the Great Spirit continuing his work of shaping the earth. [emphasis mine] ...One explanation for why they are usually heard near water is that inland communities are often too noisy to hear these booms. Their origin has not been positively identified. They have been explained as:
Meteors entering the atmosphere.
Gas:
Gas escaping from vents in the Earth's surface.
With lakes, natural gas from decaying vegetation trapped beneath the lake bottoms suddenly bursting forth. This is plausible, since Cayuga Lake and Seneca Lake are two large and deep lakes.
Explosive release of less volatile gases generated as limestone decays in underwater caves.
Military aircraft (though it cannot explain occurrences of the phenomenon which predate supersonic flight).
In some cases, they have been associated with earthquakes.
In the US state of North Carolina, that they are the sound of pieces of the continental shelf falling off into the Atlantic abyss[citation needed]
A recent explanation is that the noise is very distant thunder which has been focussed anomalously as it travelled through the upper atmosphere: see link #1 below, including for cases of anomalous transmission of sounds of man-made explosions.
Underwater caves collapsing, and the air rapidly rising to the surface.
Some people claim that it might be produced by extraterrestrial activity.[citation needed]
Firearms being discharged. " (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mistpouffers)

The second incident occurred on the morning of January 12, 2012, the sound is heard for three hours and the noise that appears every three seconds from 3 am until dawn. This audio is successfully captured by one of the people of Kota Samarahan in Malaysia." (0:30) A comment says it is also heard in Samarahan, Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Another comment: "i went to kota samarahan to verify this strange occurance or rather sound a few days ago. Amongst the people i interviewed were old times...middle aged men, and most confirmed having heard the sound , something like some dude snoring...but the sound was real loud....this is real ......not a hoax....."

The uploader of the Cumbria sounds, YonOtto, uploaded this video where he says he debunks the Manitoba sound as a ripoff of the Kiev sounds...which are in return a ripoff of a sound from a video game. YonOtto maintains his Cumbria sounds are genuine. He is quite frustrated and uses lots of expletives in his frustration. (5:08)

Anyways, this is what I have synthesized:
I. PHYSICAL SOURCES
1. Weird unexplained noises in the earth and sky have been going on since at least the 1700s, and probably even before, as indigenous people have traditions about them, such as the Iroquois
2. Some of these noises likely are associated with geophysical-tectonic activity, such as earthquakes.
3. Others are atmospheric distortions of distant thunder, air exchanges from caverns and mines, etc.
4. Some might be associated with anthropogenic activity such as subterranean drilling and construction (as for road or rail tunnels, military construction, etc.) or the HAARP technology (an issue that would warrant its own post!)
II. CULTURAL TRANSFORMATIONS
5. These various phenomena, whatever or whichever they may be, are lumped together as one phenomenon-meme by people with umbrella theories of apocalyptic scenarios (Mayan prophecies of 2012, government conspiracies and HAARP, etc.) because this is part of human culture, "the end of the world" (see John Michael Greer's book 'Apocalypse Not' for an exploration of this cultural meme, since at least Biblical times)
6. The final layer of this meme is exploited by the Internet, both by conspiracy-prophecy folks, and more mischievously by folks who use sound-editing software, videos and videogames, actual videos of real mystery sounds, to mix and create their own mystery sound videos for their own locale to "join in the fun" and be practical jokers to fool people for amusement.
Certainly there are BOTH vids of real sounds and certainly there are hoax vids being passed around the Internet. The hoaxsters just confuse the situation. The average person watches a few of these curiously or skeptically, then either becomes a "believer" or a "cynic" according to their own disposition/experience (though I would say a cynic is a believer who got burned too often and too badly!)
The end of the world meme is fundamental to our cultural mythology and so it will return again and again in one form or another. When the world doesn't end in December of 2012, there will soon be another proposed date further down the road. And those hoaxsters are just another daimonic face of the Trickster, who will also always be with us.
The earth is indeed going through physical changes...
- but it always has
The weird noise meme along with the catastrophic extinction events, are all summed up in that quote by the native Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) "that the booms were the sound of the Great Spirit continuing his work of shaping the earth." As the Cheyenne say, Creation is ongoing.
